Synopsis

Within the GO-ToS-Oil project, we investigated the effects of olive pomace application on microbial community composition and soil enzyme activity in an ‘Itrana’ olive orchard. Olive pomace was applied at different intervals prior to sampling—1 week, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year – and subsequent changes in the soil microbial community were assessed using fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiling and sequencing of the 16S rRNA and ITS2 regions. We also analysed the activity of key soil enzymes linked to nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon cycling: urease, alkaline phosphatase, and β-glucosidase. The results show clear shifts in microbial community structure and soil enzyme activity following the application of fresh olive pomace. In the early stages after application, we observed increased bacterial biomass and fungal inhibition, while in later stages both fungal diversity and relative abundance increased. Application of olive pomace reduced species richness and led to a marked restructuring of the microbial community. Enzyme activity patterns further indicated that pomace application has a significant impact on soil microbial functioning.
