Synopsis

This paper focuses on the implementation of extracurricular mother tongue and culture classes for immigrant children in Slovenia, which, despite the legal right to mother tongue classes, faces challenges in practice. A survey of 33 teachers in 2024 revealed that the main challenges are the lack of funding for teachers from the countries of origin and the lack of integration of extracurricular mother tongue and culture classes into the school environment. Although teachers are mostly positive about the cooperation with schools, they would like to be more visible and involved in school activities.
