Synopsis

This paper analyses the linguistic means of hate speech in political tweets, focusing on discrimination against immigrants and the valorisation of migration content. Drawing on the Janes TwePO corpus and the more recent (working) CorpusMigration corpus, it explores expressions of language intensity, such as intensifiers and mitigators, and patterns of violent communication. Analysing and drawing attention to these linguistic devices in political discourse is crucial, as hate speech reinforces stereotypes and prejudices and leads to discrimination and polarisation of society.
