Synopsis

This paper, through a case study, presents a historical overview of the Slovenian educational system in Hungary, and the description of its current situation. There are historical foundations for the education in a recognized minority language in the Rába Region. The current situation reveals a discrepancy between the expectations of the involved actors and the actual status of the Slovenian language within educational institutions. Given the challenges of preserving the language as a fundamental element of identity, it is crucial to develop a long-term strategy that includes systematic training for teachers.
In Hungary, this task is undertaken by the Chair of Slovenian Studies at ELTE in Budapest and The Chair of Slovenian Studies at ELTE SEK in Szombathely.
